Paul Newman dies at 83
This past Friday a great actor lost his battle with cancer; Paul Newman died at age 83 in his Westport, Conn. home. In addition to lighting up the movie screen, Newman was co-founder of the independent food company Newman’s Own. Newman was also one of the country’s top philanthropists giving away more than $220 million to various charities. The death of this legend provided an opportunity to compare the differences in various mediums; print, online, and broadcast.
The print version of this story I found in the San Jose Mercury News. The feature was printed on Saturday, and was about 1,000 words long. The article went into great detail and shared a lot of information about Paul Newman. It was complete with quotes, dates, and major milestones in Newman’s life. The majority of the article was Newman’s long career as an actor. It covered his major films and awards. It also mentioned his family; particularly his wife of 50 years Joanne Woodward. Lastly a still of Newman accompanied the article.
The online version I found at Eonline.com. It was published on Saturday as well. The layout was ideal; with a picture of Newman at the top right corner. The article was more of a list of Newman’s accomplishments. It contained links and bullet points. It contained a lot of the same information as the print article. The main difference was layout and the online version offered more pictures.
The radio version had the least amount of information. It was about 20 to 30 seconds, and was broadcast on 101.3 FM. It aired on the morning show on Saturday. It basically stated the facts; who, where, when, and how. It didn’t go into detail and had no visual aides.

Beer Truck Story
A refrigerator truck carrying Coors beer caused a delay for motorist today on the Bay Bridge. According to California Highway Patrol the truck ignited shortly after 1:00 pm, and shutdown all eastbound lanes and part of the westbound upper deck. Luckily, no motorists’ were injured in the fire.
The blaze began after a tire blew out on the tractor trailer part of the truck. The driver who was not aware of the blow out continued traveling on the bridge. Shawn Chase a CHP officer said, “The fire was set off by the tire’s metal rim scraping against the roadway.” The fire caused unsuspecting motorist to be stopped on the bridge for 45 minutes. Many drivers were seen standing alongside their vehicles trying to get a clear view of the accident.
Fire crews finally put out the flames a little after 2:00pm and all westbound lanes were reopened. The crew continued to clear the burned truck from the roadway, and CHP stated, “All lanes would be reopened by 4:00pm.”
Traffic returned to a steady flow after the accident was finally cleared from the bridge at 5:52 pm.

Telling Details
As I stand in a sea of ‘cosmetic junkies’ at a local department store I noticed a specific interaction. My eyes settled on an uncomfortable young lady who seemed to be lost. Before she could bolt for the nearest exit, a lady, who looked to be the same age as the young girl approached and offered her a rather warm greeting. I was surprised at the young girls’ reaction; she appeared to immediately be at ease. In this quite loud environment all I could watch was this great display of communication unfold. By the end of the conversation the once lost looking girl now seemed to be a confident cosmetic shopper. All it took was a warm approach, and a willingness to help.

My Favorite Writing 9-9-2008
Faith of my Fathers
By: John McCain with Mark Salter
This summer I was most delighted to read John McCain’s, Faith of my Fathers. It is an overwhelming story about three men who faced unimaginable adversity, but still held tight to their dignity. John McCain wrote a beautiful family memoir with humor, respect, and courage. McCain writes about how lessons he learned from his grandfather and father helped him survive during trying times. I enjoyed reading about the McCain’s family history, and how John McCain came to be the man he is today. I absolutely love this book, because it was impossible to put down without being moved. After reading this memoir you cannot help but feel the honor, and patriotism McCain exudes. More importantly I found it to be a lively, entertaining read. The writing style was comfortable, and understandable. It is a book with a clear message that every reader can relate to. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the 2008 presidential candidate.

Kara Swisher
All Things Digital Editor
The Wall Street Journal

Dear Mrs. Swisher,
The 2008 election will be an historical event in politics. It will attract record numbers of voters; and it could possibly yield an African American president or even a women vice president. Facebook and ABC News are teaming up for the first-ever partnership that seeks to empower voters with information. This digital partnership and the affect it will have on the 2008 presidential election will make an appealing story for your readership.
In November 2007, Facebook launched this partnership with ABC News for the 2008 presidential election-including a revamped US politics application on Facebook and co-sponsorship of the televised debates.
Today, more than 500 US politicians have Facebook Pages, where Facebook users can support candidates, learn more about them and communicate with them. Features of the politics application include:
· Debate Groups
· Politicians
· Up-to-the minute political news and video
· Dispatches from ABC News reporters assigned to the candidates
· Facebook/ABC News election pulses
· ABC News/ Facebook/ WMUR Debates
More than one million users have added the application and 300,000 have participated in at least one Debate group. Together, ABC News and Facebook aim to mobilize active political engagement.
I will be in touch with you next week to talk about this feature or other possible angles. In the mean time you can reach me at (408) 123-4567. Thank you Kara, and I look forward to speaking with you.
Sincerely,
Nicole Camet
