A refrigerator truck carrying Coors beer caused a delay for motorist today on the Bay Bridge. According to California Highway Patrol the truck ignited shortly after 1:00 pm, and shutdown all eastbound lanes and part of the westbound upper deck. Luckily, no motorists’ were injured in the fire.
The blaze began after a tire blew out on the tractor trailer part of the truck. The driver who was not aware of the blow out continued traveling on the bridge. Shawn Chase a CHP officer said, “The fire was set off by the tire’s metal rim scraping against the roadway.” The fire caused unsuspecting motorist to be stopped on the bridge for 45 minutes. Many drivers were seen standing alongside their vehicles trying to get a clear view of the accident.
Fire crews finally put out the flames a little after 2:00pm and all westbound lanes were reopened. The crew continued to clear the burned truck from the roadway, and CHP stated, “All lanes would be reopened by 4:00pm.”
Traffic returned to a steady flow after the accident was finally cleared from the bridge at 5:52 pm.
